Three young pups, all from the same litter, have been abandoned over the last fortnight. Each of the three was found in a different location, at a different time, sparking concerns that more may be out there.
Madeline East, who works with both Animals in Need and Donegal Pet Rescue, said abandoning unwanted animals is inexcusable when there are organisations such as these just a phone call away.
“There is absolutely no need for any animal, let alone young pups who shouldn’t be away from their mothers, to be dumped in this way. There are two local charities who can be called for help with unwanted dogs and cats and, of course, the Dog Shelter who take in unwanted dogs and pups.”
One of the pups was found two weeks ago at a supermarket in Gortahork. The lady who found the pup gave it to Paula Paula Doohan to care for. Paula was shocked at the age of the pup, which was just around 4 weeks.
Paula said: “The pup only about 4 weeks old, far too young to be away from its mother, and not yet able to lap up liquids or eat food.”
Another of the pups was found in the grounds of Meenaclady School. The person who found it kept it for a few weeks before giving it to Paula, who was shocked to find that the two pups are obviously related.
Last week, the Dog Pound in Letterkenny rang Animals in Need to say a lady had just handed in a pup she had found under a bush in her neighbourhoods. Because the pup was very young and quite ill and too young to fend for itself, staff at the Pound handed him straight to the care of a volunteer from Animals in Need.
“When you look at these photographs, it’s obvious that the three pups are related. We think they are Jack Russell cross bred with either a Pomeranian or a Chihuahua. They are currently being ‘fostered’ and cared for and we have found good homes for all three to go to once they are old enough and well enough.”
“We’re very concerned that there could be other pups from the same litter out there somewhere, abandoned or in distress. If anyone finds one, please bring it to the Pound or ring Donegal Pet Rescue on 086 856 6626.
“The three pups are the lucky ones. Just over a fortnight ago, another young pup, unrelated to these three, was dumped near Kilmacrenan. It was run over by a car but luckily was found and rescued. The poor creature suffered a broken femur and I’m glad to say is mending well.
“But I just cannot understand how people can be so cruel as to abandon these helpless creatures when there are organisations like ours that are more than happy to look after them. All it takes is a simple phone call.”
