Gardaí in Donegal are asking the public to be on the look-out for thieves cutting down telephone and ESB cables.
The appeal was issued after three major thefts of telephone cable - cut down from live wires - in south Donegal.
Garda Supt. Jimmy Coen told the Donegal Democrat that thieves struck on May 23 at Rath Mountain, Ballintra (near Pettigo) , May 30 at Mullanboys, Mountcharles and June 7 at Corkermore, Dunkineely. In the first two instances, they cut down substantial quantities of telephone cable and, in the third, ESB cable.
“These are very rural, remote areas. What we understand is that the individuals concerned took down cables, cut them up and brought them away, in the early hours of the morning.
“Hundreds of people were left without telephone service or electricity supply for a number of hours and this is obviously a cause for concern, especially in rural areas.
