Council bars person from meetings

Members of Bundoran Town Council voted at their monthly meeting on Tuesday to ban a member of the public from attending their council meetings.

Members of Bundoran Town Council voted at their monthly meeting on Tuesday to ban a member of the public from attending their council meetings.

The issue was discussed ‘in committee’ on Tuesday, at the end of the regular monthly meeting. After the meeting, Town Mayor, Cllr Michael McMahon said the decision was made because the woman had not given a written undertaking that she would abide by standing orders.

“We are not in the business of wanting to exclude people from meetings,” Cllr. McMahon told the Donegal Democrat.

“But we had to do this in order be in accordance with standing orders and ensure that meetings can be run in an orderly and seemly manner.

“There have been incidents in the past of inappropriate or disruptive behaviour. It is a requirement that any member of the public who wishes to attend council meetings abide by standing orders.

“Until we receive a written commitment, in the appropriate form, from this person that she will do so, then she will not be admitted to meetings,” he said.
