Riots “sheer criminality” - Troy Gallagher

A Letterkenny man who serves as a Labour Party Councillor in the London Borough of Islington’s Bunhill District, says the authorities now need to look at the causes of the riots that have caused millions of pounds worth of damage.

Cllr. Gallagher said people across his constituency were forced to evacuate and close their businesses as rioting spread from Tottenham right across the city.

Although he did not witness the worst of the rioting himself, he said he had seen the damage done and spoken with members of his local community about the chaos.

“I’ve been out meeting the local businesses and residents and they had been evacuating, pulling blinds down on their shops and putting stuff in front of their businesses. I’ve been speaking to residents who are quite afraid. My area is in Islington where it borders on to Hackney and it is literally about three feet walk across a busy street and zebra crossing to the tube station where the brunt of the incidents have been happening,” he explained.

He says the riots are the result of “sheer criminality”.

“It’s just pure and simple criminality and it has people jumping on the band-wagon and engaging in a complete orgy of looting, arson and thuggery, destroying people’s homes and businesses and placing their lives in danger,” he told Highland Radio yesterday.

Cllr. Gallagher says there are many reasons that will need to be examined to identify the root causes of the widespread rioting but he says to blame government cuts is “over simplifying” the matter.
