Donegal Local Authorities have joined together in a countywide initiative to distribute free poop scoops to the public in an effort to encourage dog owners to clean up after their dogs.

Mayor of Donegal Cllr Noel McBride has welcomed the initiative and said, “It is nice to see dog owners taking their dogs for a walk, but owners have to take responsibility for their dogs and should respect other users let it be on roads, footpaths or beaches.”

Letterkenny Town Mayor Cllr Gerry McMonagle has also welcomed the countywide initiative being launched by Donegal County Council’s Waste Awareness Officer Suzanne Tinney around raising awareness of the dangers of dog owners not cleaning up after their dogs when they defecate in public places.

Cllr McMonagle said, “This is an issue that both I and Cllr Tom Crossan have raised at recent meetings of Letterkenny Town Council and I very much welcome this initiative. It is important now that all dog owners act in a responsible manner and avail of the free poop scoop from their local Council office. If dog owners act responsibly then our greens and footpaths can remain clean and free from disease and safe for our children to enjoy.”

Buncrana Town Mayor Cllr Nicholas Crossan has also backed the initiative.

Dog Fouling is an offence under the Litter Pollution Act, 1997 and the on–the-spot fine for dog fouling is €150. If you are a dog owner or the person in charge of a dog you are required by law to remove dog faeces and dispose of it in a suitable and sanitary way.

Dog fouling is becoming a serious issue in many public places in particular public parks and beaches. These are areas where children are often at play and can be at risk of coming into contact with dog faeces. Free poop scoops will be available while stocks last from all Donegal County Council Offices, Letterkenny Town Council and Buncrana Town Council from the beginning of August. Bundoran Town Council already has in place, a number of poop scoop dispensers throughout the town and they been very successful over the past year.

Donegal’s Blue Flag beaches will also have free poop scoops available from the lifeguard huts while the lifeguards are on duty. Check the blue flag noticeboard for lifeguard times at your chosen blue flag beach.
