There was widespread shock and sadness in The Rosses on Tuesday night at the sudden death of Maureen McCarthy of Ardan Rua, Loughanure.

The divorced mother-of-one was out in a restaurant to celebrate her 43rd birthday with her mother Margaret when she suddenly collapsed.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and her remains were removed by ambulance to Letterkenny General Hospital.

Eoin McGarvey, a neighbour and family friend, said she was “a very nice, friendly person who was kind and helpful”. She was also, he added, “a big, big fan of Daniel O’Donnell and loved country music as well. Maureen also loved animals and kept dogs and cats.

“Her death has taken us all by shock and our hearts go out to Margaret, Maureen’s son Danny and her extended family and friends.”

Gardaí have said that they are not of the view that there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
