It is expected to be announced in the coming weeks if the Twins Towns is to get a mutlimillion Euro funding grant for the proposed new swimming pool at the Finn Valley Centre.
At Tuesday’s meeting of Stranorlar Electoral Area, committee members heard from Area Manager for Water, Environment and emergency service, Johnny McGettigan, that Donegal County Council was “awaiting a decision in the next few weeks” on whether the project will be given the green light.
Stranorlar Electoral Area Committee Chairman, Cllr. Frank McBrearty said he and fellow committee member Cllr. Martin Harley, both met with the Minister for Sport Jimmy Deenihan, T.D recently, describing the outcome as “very positive”.
“We had a very good meeting with the Minister and we put up a very good case for the swimming pool in our area and we are very hopeful the Minister will make a positive announcement,” Cllr McBrearty stated.
Cllr Harley said it was vital for the project to be included in this funding programme as one of the last 12 new swimming pools to be built nationally as the next round of funding available is only for the refurbishments of older swimming pools.
He said he was “quietly optimistic” about the pending announcement.
Cllr. Patrick McGowan said the latest announcement would be for grant funding of €3.8m and that over €1m had been spent on the project so far, to secure sites for the new venture.
He said it would create more jobs and “add value” to the Finn Valley Centre.
He said if the funding was not awarded it would be “vaporised” into other public expenditure.
