A prominent GAA figure has unreservedly condemned a recent robbery at a prominent GAA venue during a training session and described it as “nothing short of despicable.”
The robbery took place last Friday evening at Tirconaill Park in Donegal Town where the Four Master’s Ladies time were wrapping up their preparations for Sunday’s county final.
A total of four cars were robbed with malicious damage caused to three of them.
The Chairman of the Four Masters club in Donegal, Sean Dunnion told the Donegal Democrat, “This has been a despicable act and a sad reflection on the times that we are living in.
“The girls were out on their final stint of training before the county final and on returning to their cars found windows smashed, doors forced open and a lot of their possessions gone including mobile phones, cash, make-up - anything that was of any value.
“These are girls that are giving freely of their time to represent their club and their county and it is an absolute disgrace. I hope the perpetrators are proud of their disgusting bit of work.
“This incident was highly unsettling for the girls and upset their whole preparations for the match but no excuse for the result on Sunday.
“We all accept that we were beaten by the better team on the day.”
Mr Dunnion added that unfortunately in the present financial climate that these type of incidents are not uncommon.
“I would urge both players and spectators to be extremely vigilant when attending matches throughout the county ensuring that their cars are locked and valuables placed in the boot.
“In reality this does not just apply to sporting occasions - in the present day we have to remember that there are criminals out there just wishing to seize the opportunity - all I can say to everybody is just to be careful.”
The Gardai in Donegal Town have confirmed that they are investigating the incident and would appeal for anyone who may have noticed anything unusual in the vicinity of Tirconaill Park last Friday evening to contact them on 074-9721021.
It is understood that some of the stolen property has since been recovered in the Barnes Gap area.
