New radio station for south Donegal

A new community radio station will take to the airwaves tomorrow evening at 6.00 pm (Fri. 4th.) serving the residents of South and West Donegal.
On 22nd December last South West Donegal Community Radio Limited signed a 10-year Community Sound Broadcasting Contract with The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland ("BAI") and will broadcast on 88.6FM to Killybegs, Miltown and environs.
The station will initially broadcast for four hours on Monday and Friday evenings and for twelve hours at weekends.
Speaking at the signing of the contract, Michael O'Keeffe, Chief Executive of the BAI said: "I would like to congratulate South West Donegal Community Radio on their contract signing today.
"This new community radio station will add to the mix of radio services available to listeners in south-west Donegal. We wish the station every success over the term of its licence".
The board and committee of South West Donegal Community Radio are delighted to have signed a 10 year contract for to supply a local radio service to the people of south west Donegal. SWDCR, as a not for profit registered company whose structure provides for membership, management and programming by members of the community providing for the social and cultural needs of the catchment area has been in operation since 2005. It has completed very successfully two 30 day temporary licences with staff made up of volunteers from the area. The radio station studios are based in the Ringfort Inn, Buckles.
Chairperson of SWDCR, Denis McDaid told the Donegal Democrat, "We are delighted to be finally going on air tomorrow evening and hope to attract a broad range of listeners.
"Our aim is to cater for all sectors and age groups and we will include talk radio, current affairs and a good selection of music to include pop, country and traditional.
"We will also be featuring local sports results on the weekends and would ask our listeners to phone in results to us as they happen as we would not have the same resources as the larger stations.
"Obviously with the General Election just announced we will be giving a limited and very balanced election coverage."
SWDCR will commence broadcasting tomorrow evening and you can tune in on 88.6 on the FM waveband,
The service will initially run on Friday evenings from 6 pm till 10 pm, Saturday and Sundays from 10 am till 10 pm and on Monday evenings from 6 pm till 10 pm with a 7 day service being available within six months.
