Gardaí are asking to be vigilant following reports of thieves cutting down telephone cables in south Donegal.

Garda Supt. Jimmy Coen told the Donegal Democrat that two such incidents have been reported recently - on May 23 at Rath Mountain, Ballintra (near Pettigo) and on May 30 at Mullanboys, Mountcharles.

“These are very rural, remote areas. The individuals concerned took down cables, cut them up and brought them away. This is happening in the early hours of the morning. There is a significant cost to eircom and inconvenience to subscribers. This is also a dangerous activity that seems to be occuring more frequently as copper increases in value. We are asking for the public’s assistance in this matter. If anyone notices anything suspicious at all, even workmen in bright yellow vests operating at what seems like an unusual time, please contact gardaí at either Donegal town on 972 1021 or Ballyshannonon 071 984 1102. We will respond immediately.”

The Democrat reported in March that thieves took their lives in their hands to remove about a mile’s length of ESB lines in Portsalon that were carrying 20,000 volts. This was believed to be the fourth such incident in that area.
