"No point in burying your head in the sand" - Judge tells debtors

A Circuit Court judge has urged all people who fall into financial arrears with mortgage societies and banks and are the subject of legal hearings, to attend court cases in person and offer their side of the story.

Speaking at Tuesday's sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court where a large number of motions dealing with such arrears were adjourned to subsequent sittings, Judge John O'Hagan said there was "very little" he could do if the individuals involved did not appear before him.

Expressing sympathy for those facing the threat of "having the roof taken from over their heads", he referred to one specific case where a total of 24,000 euro in outstanding monies was owed. "There's no point in burying your head in the sand.

"I can do nothing unless the individual appears before me," insisted the Judge.
