Responding to the news that union members of the Gallagher's bakery workforce will be denied union representation at the redundancy talks, Sinn Fin's Donegal TD Pearse Doherty has said that these workers have a right to union representation and that it is not acceptable for such a successful and profitable company to treat its workers as dispensable.

The Donegal TD said that the workers must be afforded union representation at the talks and has written to management of the company urging them to reconsider their decision.

Doherty said: "The decision of the company to move its operations from Donegal to Dublin is regrettable and will have a seriously negative impact on the community here in Ardara. With unemployment sky-rocketing in Donegal we cannot underestimate how devastating this will be and the knock-on effect it will have on the whole community.

"While every effort must be made to retain the fresh bread element of this company in Ardara those that are losing their jobs have a right to union representation. "It is not acceptable for such a successful and profitable company to treat its workers as dispensable. These workers and the entire community have brought the company from strength to the strength through to the successful business that it is today.

"Their lives have been turned upside down and the least the company can do is afford them their right to union representation. I have written to the management urging them to reconsider this decision.
