A unique challenge will get under way in Donegal tomorrow (Friday) when a team of 36 marathon runners with attempt to make the journey from Malin head to Mizen head in just 65 hours.
Running in relay teams the athletes will run from Malin via Buncrana, Letterkenny, Ballybofey, Laghey and Bundoran and on to Sligo in the first day. All those taking part in the charity event to raise funds for Crumlin Childrens Hospital are highly experienced marathon runners. Former three time Olympian and Dublin city marathon champion Dick Hooper has come out of retirement to take part in the relay challenge.
Among the organisers is Waterford man, Ronan Walsh, who’s wife Aoife hails from the well-known MacGabhann family from Ballaghderg. “We are hoping to complete the challenge in 65 hours and we are fairly confident we’ll do that. We are trying to get a few people to join us along the way and some of the lads from Letterkenny are hopefully going to join us on Friday,” said Ronan, who is now a member of the Raheny Shamrocks athletic club.
The group are aiming to arrive on the tip of the south coast by Sunday afternoon.
He advise those who may wish to join them along the way to first make contact with the race director on 087 1644483.
