Yesterday’s meeting of Donegal County Council was adjourned a second time following another outburst by Labour Cllr. Frank McBrearty Jr. The meeting had also been adjourned in the morning for similar reasons.

When the meeting reconvened about 15 minutes later, Cllr. McBrearty suggested that some members of the council had drink taken and should not be in chamber.

“You need to get a breathalyser to make sure everybody’s under the limit,” he said. He had also commented before the adjournment that a breathalyser might be needed in the chamber.

Before adjourning the meeting, Donegal Mayor, Sinn Féin Cllr. Cora Harvey, issue with conduct at their meeting yesterday. Without naming Cllr. McBrearty, Mayor Harvey said councillors had a responsibility “to conduct our business in a proper, adult manner, and if we can’t do that I don’t know what we’re doing here at all.”

The exchange took place during a discussion of roads funding in the Stranorlar Electoral Area.
