More lorry drivers use phone illegally - Judge
A District Judge says he has noted many more lorry drivers appear to illegally use hand held mobile phones than those who drive cars.
Judge Seamus Hughes asked a garda, during a driving while holding a phone case, if he noticed that more lorry drivers used phones illegally than other drivers?
He said: "It's my perception that lorry drivers have the propensity to use phones more than car drivers. Perhaps it is because they have to work ‘on the hoof' as it were, making deliveries etc."
Garda Patrick Geraghty said many of the lorries he inspected would have had handsfree kits fitted.
Judge Hughes made the remarks during the case of Kevin McCafferty of Drumbrick, Termon, who was stopped for using a hand held phone while driving at Carnamuggagh, Letterkenny on March 28, 2010. He was fined €125.
