Forty-four schools have been billed for water charges in the Letterkenny Electoral Area, according to a report at Monday's electoral area meeting.

Eunan Kelly, area manager for corporate services, said that of the 44 schools billed in the electoral area, 19 are up-to-date, six owe arrears of less than 100 euro, 13 owe arrears of 100 to 1,000 euro and six owe arrears of greater than 1,000 euro.

Mr. Kelly said that for most of the schools the arrears come only from the last bill received, "so they are really only one bill behind."

"Most of them are taking it seriously," he said.

Under a 2008 arrangement circulated by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, schools were to be charged a flat rate charge per pupil in 2008 and 2009, until a full cost recovery/volumetric basis came into effect last year.

Since October 2010, 77 Donegal schools, including 12 in the Letterkenny Electoral Area, have been granted funding for water conservation measures, such as installation of water displacement devices, percussion spray taps, thermostatic mixing valves and other water controls.
