The visible aftermath of the big freeze on the county's roads has led to calls for motorists to take extra care due to the number of potholes created since the thaw set in.

Donegal County Council is advising all drivers to exercise caution as they begin the task of repairing the crater-like potholes on many routes around the county.

They say they are currently prioritising the worst affected areas on the busiest routes and aim to have a full compliment of workers tackling the problem from next week on.

Divisional Maintenance Manager for Roads and Transportation Services for Donegal County Council, James Boyle, says that although many potholes have surfaced since the thaw out began on Sunday night the problem is expected to worsen as the freezing temperatures experience means deep ground frost may not have subsided in yet.

"I would consider it a little bit early yet to assess the full damage in that the frost hasn't thawed out of the ground completely yet. There is a lot of damage done all around the place, it's pretty general and we had inspections yesterday in different places and we have crews mobilised today working on the worst potholes on our busiest roads," Mr Boyle explained.

"There are places we have severe potholes and on busy routes and those are being taken care of first until we get back in full operation next week," he added.

He says drivers can expect to see more potholes develop in the coming days as the extent of the damage to roads surfaces during the extreme cold snap is still being revealed.

"With frost damage, it tends to make the road boil up and it only happens in maybe two or three days, depending on the depth of the frost," he added.

A number of the main routes in the county affect are in the Barnesmore Gap between Donegal Town and Ballybofey, Ballybofey to Letterkenny Road. The N56 is badly affected on the approach to Creeslough from the Letterkenny side. Motorist are also advised to tale care on the Finner Road between Budoran and Ballyshannon as well as the N56 route from Donegal Town to Killybegs and the R236 towards Glencolumbkille.
