Donegal crooner, Daniel O'Donnell, has been described by his wife, Majella, as a "very smooth" operator.

Speaking on the Late Late Show on Friday night, Majella, recalled meeting Daniel for the first time when she was working in her parents' bar in Tenerife.

"I knew he was coming up that night because he actually knew my patents before he knew me. He had a few friends with him in the bar. We didn't have any music on and it was fairly quiet. My mother said to me ‘Daniel's here and there's nothing going on. You wouldn't sing a song?' So I just sang a ballet. We got chatting and the rest, as they say, is history," she told Ryan Tubridy.

Majella also explained how Daniel proposed to her.

"He asked me to go up stairs and phone my mum. At this time, I was in Ireland and they were in Tenerife. He came up with me and I wished my mum a Happy Christmas. He asked to say hello to her. He said ‘Marian, I have a job to do now - I'm asking your daughter to marry me'. So she started crying and I started crying and that was it."

Majella explained that she "took her time" before she introduced Daniel to her children.

"I'd never been with anybody since I'd divorced my husband and I wanted them to get used to him first. They got on brilliantly and they were hoping that I would meet somebody because I'd been on my own for quite a while."

She added: "I sometimes fell I don't want to tell Daniel that they're being awkward because I'd be afraid that he might dislike them."

Daniel's wife disclosed that she found it "very hard" to spend money after she remarried.

"I'd been divorced with two children, I'd watched every penny I had and had gone to the supermarket with so many pounds in my purse and a calculator to make sure I didn't go over. When we were married, Daniel would tell me to go out and buy and outfit - I'd still be going to the bargain rails and found it really hard to say that I'm going to spent 300 euro on a dress," she added.
