The 26-year-old man who died on Christmas night in a single vehicle collision near Stranorlar has been named as Luke Peeks, from Inver.

Mr Peeks, 26, from Carraduffy, Inver, died from injuries sustained circa 11pm on Christmas night, when his Renault Clio left the road and came to a stop in a field not far from the landmark St Joseph’s Hospital in Stranorlar.

Mr Peeks was on his way from Inver to Castlefin, to visit his girlfriend.

Supt. Vincent O’Brien of an Garda Siochana, told the Democrat: “It is a terrible tragedy occurring, particularly at this time of year when people are trying to be with their loved ones.”

Local politician, Cllr Patrick McGowan stated: “It is a notorious section of road and there have been many accidents there, sadly a number of them fatal. I wish to extend my sympathy to the families bereaved by this terrible tragedy. Any fatality at any time of year is a tragedy, but this is particularly tragic at this time of year, my heart goes out to them on their loss.”

The fatal collision occurred at the town land of Treenamullin, Stranorlar around 11pm on Christmas night. Mr Peeks, who turned 26 on December 3rd, was removed by ambulance to Letterkenny General Hospital.

The road where the fatality occurred has been the scene of as many as three fatalities over recent years, and was closed for most of St. Stephen’s Day for an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Gardaí from Ballybofey, who are investigating the tragedy, rushed with emergency service personnel to the scene shortly after the collision occurred.

On St. Stephen’s Day, diversions continued to operate until 2pm from Stranorlar via The Cross and Killygordon when travelling from Stranorlar towards Lifford, and from Killygordon via the Cross to Stranorlar/Ballybofey.

Locally, the sense of deep sadness that a young man is his mid 20s had lost his life was added to by the fact that this latest road fatality occurred on Christmas night.

This latest fatality as the year comes to a close, brings the number of deaths on Donegal’s roads to seven, one more than the 2011 record low of six deaths.
