Doherty says MRI service should be in place on weekends

Pearse Doherty, TD

Pearse Doherty, Sinn Féin TD, has called on the minister for health to take action to ensure that radiographers remain on call on weekends at Letterkenny University Hospital.
Deputy Doherty raised the issue today after receiving figures from the Health Service Executive that he said showed that no MRI service is in place at the hospital from 5pm on Fridays and through the weekend.
He called the unavailability of MRI scanning facilities at the Letterkenny hospital during the weekend, "extremely concerning".
“This is obviously extremely concerning, considering the importance of MRI scans in helping to diagnose or monitor treatment for a variety of conditions in patients, as the technology can provide physicians with extremely detailed images such as for the detection of tumors, certain diseases or other abnormalities which may be present in the body," Deputy Doherty said.
He said the absence of a dedicated MRI service for patients during the weekend period was not acceptable. The deputy said he raised the issue after receiving complaints from a number of constituents who said they had been unable to access radiology facilities at the hospital over the weekend.
The Saolta University Health Care Group, of which Letterkenny University Hospital is a member, has been asked to comment on the concerns that Deputy Doherty has raised.
