The old Post office in Glencolmcille
The Glencolmcille post office will reopen this morning after ten weeks of closure.
The new post office is located at Cashel, Glencolmcille and will be run by two brothers, Michael and Adrian Byrne.
The Byrne brothers also run the local undertakers, petrol station and supermarket in the area.
The last post office closed when the post mistress vacated the post earlier this year. In the intervening period, all customers had to travel to Carrick to avail of services, which is located a distance of six miles away.
Fianna Fáil Deputy, Pat 'the cope' Gallagher, welcomed the reopening of the post office. He also paid tribute to the Byrne family for their initiative in taking up the new post office.
He said: “I am delighted that the new post office has reopened this morning in Glencolmcille. It is a vital service for the people of the area. A post office provides an essential service and is a central part of any rural community,” he said.
The Leas Ceann Comhairleach also paid tribute to the outgoing post mistress who vacated the job earlier this year.
He said: “I am sure that the people of Glencomcille will be delighted that they have a state of the art post office that will cater for their needs in the years ahead.”
