Rory Gallagher is regarded as one of the greatest guitarists ever. Many of today’s top musicians, including The Edge from U2, Slash of Guns N’ Roses fame, Johnny Marr of the Smiths and Brian May of Queen, cite Rory as an inspiration in their formative musical years.

The town of Ballyshannon in is where Rory was born on March 2, 1948. Almost from the start, he was destined for great things, being born at the appropriately named “Rock Hospital”. The 12th Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival opens today and continues through to this Sunday, June 2 in Ballyshannon. Thousands of Rock ‘n Blues music fans are set to converge on the town from some 20 different countries for what will be a special Failte Ireland Gathering Festival with the theme “Failte Isteach Rock”.

The festival will feature Rory’s former band members Gerry McAvoy and Ted McKenna with “The Band of Friends” and Mark Feltham and Brendan O’Neill with “Nine Below Zero”, and the band that toured the world with AC/DC for 412 days, “The Answer”.

The festival has become a mecca for fans to witness legendary guitarists and this year is no different with acts such as Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash), Pat McManus (Mama’s Boys), Johnny Gallagher (Boxtie), Crow Black Chicken (Cork), Barry Barnes & “Sinnerboy”, Marcel Scherpenzeel (Holland), Jed Thomas, Seamie O’Dowd Band, Dave McHugh Band (Dublin), Laundromat (Holland), Tony Dowler & The Hellhounds” (UK), “The Loop” (Germany), “Moonchild” (Ireland) and many many more ....... In all, 30 Acts on 15 Stages over 4 days ... its a unique festival tribute that honours one of the greatest of all time. 
Irish Rock ‘n Blues legend Rory Gallagher conquered the world, he was an inspirational musician to many but unique to us all, Rory Gallagher’s legacy is there for all to appreciate. He started out with the showband “The Impact” before establishing “Taste”. He gave us great recordings and performing moments such as Montreux and at the Isle of Wight. Rory was pure relentless and, with the Rory Gallagher Band, continued that dedication and hard work on a global scale. He produced more than a dozen albums, devoting his entire life to music and his fans, selling over 30 million albums worldwide with his marathon tours and live performances winning him great acclaim. 
The Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival in Ballyshannon was established in 2002, seven years after Rory’s untimely passing, and has become Ireland’s leading Blues Rock Festival, honouring the life, music and legacy of the Late Rory Gallagher. Rory Gallagher won many accolades, not least the hearts of millions of music fans across the world.

Ballyshannon, a small south Donegal town will come to a standstill, its normal population is 2,500 people but during the Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival, the town’s capacity bursts to its limits as in excess of 10,000 music lovers from over

20 separate countries converge on the town to remember Rory.

There are non-stop free open air concerts on the streets of Ballyshannon, pub sessions, workshops, exhibitions, and nightly Big Top Festival Concerts from today through to Sunday.
