Donegal dogs could win a year’s supply of dog food if they’re on top of their game at the annual Donegal Donkey Sanctuary Open Day this Sunday.

The top dog in each of five classes in the Mega Dog Show will win a year’s supply of dog food and there is also a prize of €280 worth of dog grooming.

And the dog show is just one of the many events on offer at the fun day for all the family this Sunday, June 17 from 2pm at the Castledooey, Raphoe-based sanctuary.

The day will also feature vintage cars and tractors, Clydesdale horses, sled-pulling huskies, face-painting, arts and crafts stalls, music on the gig rig and a barbecue.

There will also be lots of stands featuring pet-care products and services such as training, grooming and dog-walking.

Manager Danny Curran said people working in the pet trade are also welcome to set up a stand.

“Trainers, groomers, walkers -- anybody who wants to put up a stand and is connected to the cat or dog trade

It’s a busy time for the sanctuary. They are currently responsible for 50 donkeys, 36 at the sanctuary and the rest at half-way houses. From a half-way house, donkeys are adopted by foster homes, which the sanctuary vets.

“We have to be sure that the donkey is going to a good home, otherwise it’s as well here,” manager Danny Curran said.

The sanctuary is run on a completely voluntary basis and all proceeds from the day will help fund its important work.
