Tradition holds that the big day for romance originated from St Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14 and legend says that St Valentine left a farewell note for the jailor’s daughter who became his friend and signed it “from your Valentine”. There began the tradition of exchanging declarations of love in all kinds of forms - from letters, to messages in newspapers, to radio requests, to the new ultra modern text, e-mail and internet messages.
Things have come a long way since St Valentine himself.
