The organisers of a prestigious international conference taking place in Bundoran this week are inviting local people come along.

Each year, Drew University in New Jersey hosts a conference on Irish and Irish American history and culture. This year, for the very first time, the conference is taking place outside of the United States. Around 60 Americans are travelling to Bundoran for the conference, where they will hear from international and local speakers.

The conference opens tonight at 7.30pm in the Atlantic Apartotel, with a lecture from Dr Christine Kinealy about her new book on the famine, “The Kindness of Strangers: Charity and the Great Hunger in Ireland”. This will be followed by a wine and cheese reception, and music from The Henry Girls. All are welcome to come along, admission free.

On Thursday and Friday, panels include Peace Studies, Film, The Irish Language, Surfing Culture, Local History, Popular Culture, Irish Writers and more at The Atlantic Apartotel, Donegal Adventure Centre, La Sabbia Restaurant and Bundoran Cineplex.

Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh will perform on Friday night, at the closing supper and awards presentation, while there will also be entertainment during the week from Maura Logue and Niamh Currid, Johnny Gallagher and The Logues.
