Dave Gallagher is coming to Gortahork for the Gallagher Clan Gathering next month and he’s bringing a little prezzie for the clan with him.
A native of Southern California, Dave caught the surfing bug at the age of 12. He particularly relates to the surfers of the 1950’s when wooden surfboards were king and he started building wooden surfboards himself.
Surfboard design and construction soon became one of Dave’s favourite pastimes and a therapeutic respite from his full time job as a firefighter/paramedic. Although Gallagher boards are built for surfing, they unique design and craftsmanship means they look just as at home adorning a wall as they do on the crest of a wave.
While he’s here, Dave hopes to catch some waves himself but he wants to leave the board behind as a souvenir of the Gathering. “After I surf it in Ireland, I’d like to leave it there. California it is very common to have surfboards displayed on walls,” he says.
Ideally, Dave would love to see the board on display in a pub or other business owned by, you guessed it, a Gallagher.
The Gallagher Global Gathering takes place September 6-15 in Gortahork, It’s a celebration that boasts something for everyone, as clan chief Adrian Gallagher explains. “The programme is varied to enable those attending to get a flavour for all aspects of our heritage, from the language and music to local history and genealogy.
