Culture Night, which this year falls on Friday, September 20, is a national initiative offering a huge range of artistic and cultural events completely free of charge.

In Letterkenny, the opening event is the An Cosán Glas artists’ hugely popular Loinnir illuminated Sculpture Trail

at Letterkenny Town Park, 6-10.30pm. The trail will showcase a collection of over 20 brand new works created by the Gaeltacht-based artists group. The trail attracted over 4,000 visitors when it was premiered at their annual

night time show at Machaire Rabhartaigh on July 19 and 20 last. Artists featured include Deirdre Ní Bhraoinain, Seamus Kennedy, Annjo Carr, Ewan Berry, Caoimhín Mac Aoidh, Mickey McFadden, Billy Wynter (Cornwall ), Leanne McLaughlin, Aoife Valley, Tim Johnson ( sle of Wight) and Máire Ní Fhearraigh.

Visitors to Loinnir are encouraged to bring a torch and wear a warm jacket and appropriate footwear.

Other events

From early evening, there will be a programme of Family friendly free events in cultural venues and facilities throughout Letterkenny, including Donegal County Museum, the Regional Cultural Centre, An Grianán Theatre, The Artworks, Ross Fine Art Gallery, The Central Library, Full Tilt Recording Studios, St. Eunan’s Cathedral, Create-A-Link Art Studio, ArtCo Gallery and Donegal Youth Service at The Loft.

Among groups performing at events in Letterkenny will be the Donegal Youth Orchestra, Donegal Childrens String Orchestra, Errigal Groove Orchestra - all of whom are affiliated to the Donegal Music Education Partnership - as well as t St. Eunan’s Cathedral Choir, Cór Ailigh, The Conwal Singers and The Colmcille Gospel Choir.

Other groups taking part will include Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Craobh Leitir Ceanainn, Blue Ribbon Performing Arts Academy, Footsteps Theatre (Belfast), North West Words, Friday Art Group and Create A Link Studio artists.

Culture Night also provides an excellent platform for individual writers, performers and visual artists to showcase their work. Among those availing of the opportunity to take to the stage tonight will be Ted Ponsonby, Brendan McGlynn, John Muldowney, Declan McLafferty, Mark Black, Liam Kelly and Simon McCafferty – all at the Goof’s Gaff cabaret event at An Grianán Theatre, storyteller Joe Brennan at the Central Library, Kevin Higgins, Deirdre McClay, Maureen Curran, Leo Boner, Eamonn Bonner, Nao Cannon and Michael Gillespie – all at the North

West Word readings at Cáfe Blend and Ann Jennings, Diana McLaughlin and Daniel Braddell at the Music for Culture Night event at St. Eunan’s Cathedral.
