Donegal people in the Celbridge area and friends, were privileged to come to close terms with “Sam” on Saturday the 13th of April.
Indeed the famous trophy which had come all the way from Donegal courtesy of Pat Conaghan, was well blessed by Fr. Kevin Doherty CC, a native of Donegal, in St Patrick’s church beforehand.
Next the famous trophy moved on to Celbridge GAA pavilion where it received a rousing reception until the ‘wee” hours.
There was a brilliant night of ceol agues craic. The capacity gathering was entertained by traditional Irish group Macula, followed by Shaun Gallagher, who like Sam, travelled from Donegal for the event and completed the musical evening to the delight of all present.
The event was organized to raise funds for Pieta House and a huge debt of gratitude is due to all who supported the event, either by their presence on the night, or who bought tickets.
It could not have happened without the tremendous amount of work that preceded the night by the organizing committee, mainly consisting of Donegal people living in Celbridge.
Thanks is also due to all who provided prizes for the raffle, which raised a substantial amount of money as well. On the night Mary Daly welcomed Margaret Maloney from Pieta House, who briefly outlined the voluntary work done for people and the support it provides for them and she thanked all those who made the night such a success. Hopefully “Sam” will be back in Kildare in the not too distant future!
I was asked by the organizing committee to do a write up on the recent visit of Sam Maguire to Celbridge. I happened to be present on the night when on a visit to my sister in Celbridge, who is married to Ardara native Joe Breslin.
Every good wish.
