Members of the Donegal Music Education Partnership’s Children’s String Orchestra took part in the fifth Annual Coole Music Orchestra Festival in Gort, Co Galway on Sunday, March 4.
In February 2008, Coole Music hosted its first Junior Orchestra Festival. Four orchestras from Counties Galway and Clare came together to play music in the ballroom of the Lady Gregory Hotel in Gort. The festival was an instant hit and clearly filled a need to give young orchestras in the West of Ireland an opportunity for performance and networking.
The success of the festival was recognised by the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras, and Coole Music received the Special Achievement Award from the IAYO in the National Concert Hall in February 2009. This year the Children’s String Orchestra from Donegal was an integral part of the performance.
The Children’s String Orchestra is conducted by Victor Yélamo, and the Orchestra played a range of pieces including Bach’s Minuet in G. Ella Doherty from Kiltoy in Letterkenny is leader of the Orchestra. The Coole Music Orchestra Festival attracts orchestras from all over Ireland.
