Democrat columnist Paddy Meehan spent a few interesting days on Arranmore Island recently and most o his column - Meejan’s muses - in this Thursday’s Democrat is dedicated to the island. Here’s a taste of what he has to say, but for more, don’t miss this Thursday’s Donegal Democrat:

“As I stood at the top of Poll an Mhadaidh on Arranmore Island last Friday afternoon overlooking the islands of Owey, Tory, Rutland and Iniskeeagh and the mainland of Donegal, my immediate thoughts were, could there be anywhere more beautiful than our own county?

“I spent two days in this unique island which is steeped in history and folklore and indeed ‘craic’, along with 30, mainly teachers as part of the Donegal Education Centre’s contribution to the ‘Embracing the Heritage of our Islands’ project.

Among the group Dublin teacher (Dungloe man) Neil Sweeney whose 50 years’ commitment to national ‘Schools Athletics’ at Santry Stadium is remarkable. Director of the Education Centre Sally Bonner and father and son Jimmy and Liam Boyle are to be commended for their huge input into making this weekend possible.

“The dedication and commitment of Annagry man Jimmy Boyle who is General Manager of IOTA, continuously promoting Donegal’s offshore islands has to be acknowledged.”
