Recycle your batteries and make a child’s life a bit brighter

January is about to get a whole lot brighter, thanks to your old waste batteries!

January is about to get a whole lot brighter, thanks to your old waste batteries!

WEEE Ireland (the Irish compliance scheme for battery and waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling) has been collecting and recycling batteries throughout Donegal as part of the Spread a Little Sunshine campaign for LauraLynn House at the Children’s Sunshine Home.

Every battery collected by you over the Christmas period can now be brought back for recycling before January 31st and will contribute to a fund for the children’s hospice. WEEE Ireland aim to recycle 4.5 million batteries as part of this very special campaign – that is one battery for every man, woman and child in the country.

It is very easy to get involved, simply bring your batteries back to one of the following places in Donegal before the end of January:

• Civic amenity sites:

Cardonagh Civic Amenity Site, Railway Road, Cardonagh

Stranorlar Civic Amenity Site, Railway Road, Stranorlar

Laghey Civic Amenity Site, Ballyshannon Road, Donegal Town

Letterkenny Civic Amenity Site, Carnmuggagh, Letterkenny

Milford Civic Amenity Site, Moyle Road, Milford

Dungloe Civic Amenity Site, Uduras na Gaeltachta Industrial Estate, Dungloe

• Any retailer that sells batteries in Donegal (no purchase necessary)

• WEEE Ireland special collections

• Any business, school or club where you see the blue WEEE Ireland battery box.

This campaign has captured the imagination of businesses, schools, clubs and community groups across the country. If WEEE Ireland reach their target of 4.5 million, a battery powered electric SUV will be donated to the charity for use by both the families and the staff.

Ambassador for the campaign Lorraine Keane was on hand to encourage people to bring back their much-needed batteries; “Thank you to everyone across the country who has already collected old waste batteries. You have done the hard work – so now all you have to do is bring them back before January 31st for recycling! It is free and easy to contribute to this amazing campaign, and your batteries will make a huge difference this January to LauraLynn House as well as the environment.”
