Tracey Flood who organised the novel Kilometres 4 Kids charity walk at the Mall Park in Ballyshannon was thrilled with the response.
“Such was the response to our ‘get out and walk for children challenge’ that on Sunday last 320 children registered for the walk and between them completed 3,145 laps of the Mall Park, Ballyshannon totalling a distance of 1,239 km walked! This well surpassed the 1,000 km aim of the day.
“Congratulations to all the young people who walked and to the parents who accompanied them (even though their laps didn’t count towards the challenge). Up to 30 men, including our editor here, braved the high heel challenge and some enjoyed it so much they even walked it 2 and 3 times!”
Tracey said she wished to thank all those who had helped in any way with the event:
“I would like to thank everyone, family and friends who helped on the day, Joan McGrath for all her help organising, Niall McCready who donated the marquee, Brendan Travers who donated the sound system, Ballyshannon Town Council for use of the Mall Park and all Mary’s help in sorting it out, , COPE, Galway who loaned the ‘heels’ and to the Road Safety Authority who provided hi visability vests for everyone. Unfortunately due to the large turnout on the day we ran out of these and apologies for anyone that didn’t receive one. A special thanks to all the local schools who without their support we could never have completed the challenge.”
All children who participated were entered into draw for cinema tickets, kindly sponsored by Bundoran Cineplex. Winners of this were, Ellen Monaghan, Abbeylands, Katie McMullin, Creevy, Caitlin Gillespie, Kildoney and Emer McDevitt, Rossnowlagh. Winner of the ‘Guess how many Sweets in the Jar’ was Lauren Foy, Coolcholly who correctly guessed 133 sweets.
Raffle tickets are still on sale in local businesss and draw will take place on 15th October in the Bridgend Bar. Prizes are two nights B & B for two people in a B & B Ireland Home, Lunch Voucher for Allingham Arms Hotel, Bundoran and n40 voucher for Symths Toystore. All of the prizes are sponsored by the businesses themselves and thank you to each of them.
Over n3,000 has been raised to date for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Ronald McDonald House, Crumlin and Paediatric Department, Sligo General Hospital. “The aim of the day apart from raising funds was to encourage children to participate in physical activity in a fun way and I think we achieved this. I want to say a really big thank you to everyone who supported the day and donated so generously,” Tracey added.
