If you fancy a flutter in the coming days, you could do no worse than to place a wager on two beauties from Donegal taking this year’s Rose of Tralee title - one representing her home county while the other is representing Dubai. And to add a bit of spice to proceedings their biggest rival and favourite to lift this year’s Rose title is a Dub!
Donegal Rose Maria McCole from Letterkenny has been tipped as one of the favourites to be crowned this year’s Rose of Tralee according to Boylesports. The 23-year-old teacher has been cut from 14/1 into 10/1 to win the coveted crown following a flurry of bets in favour of the stunner. Daughter of Stephenie and Michael McCole, her Dad is known through his association with Letterkenny General Hospital, as retired CEO of Community Care at the Hospital.
And Maria also just happens to be a cousin of Donegal GAA senior team manager, Jim McGuinness.
But while Maria’s biggest competition is Dubliner Siobhéal Nic Eochaidh who is the 5/1 favourite, she will also have to contend with the Dubai Rose, Grainne Boyle. Daughter of former County Treasurer Grace Boyle and husband James,
Grainne is third favourite at 6/1 behind the Wexford Rose at 11/2. The Termon girl is also in the teaching profession and is currently working in the Middle East.
“Dublin are Donegal’s biggest rivals this month not just in GAA but the Rose of Tralee as well”, commented Nicola McGeady, Boylesports PR Spokesperson told the Democrat.
“The competition is fierce and with 32 hopefuls competing for the crown, the judges will certainly have a tough task on their hands choosing a winner”, she continued.
And while we were onto them they offered a real incentive as Boylesport say they will pay out at 125/1 - the Donegal Double - if the Donegal Rose wins the Rose of Tralee and Donegal lift the Sam Maguite on September 18th. It’s 3/1 for a Donegal v Kerry final and in the match betting for the All Ireland semi final, Donegal are 5/2 to beat Dublin in 70 mins whilst Dublin have been installed at 2/5. Could be a few bob in there for a smart punter!
