Welch Collection is a Huge Success at the Alley Theatre
The impressive exhibtion on show in the Alley Gallery.
Over the past two weeks Strabane District Council with generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund has been hosting a celebration of the works of Strabane native R.J Welch (1856 -1939) at the award winning Alley Gallery. RJ Welch who was born in Main Street, Strabane had a career spanning some 53 years and was one of the greatest photographers on this island, and as a mark of his abilities was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria.
His fields of interest included natural history, archaeology and topography, however it is tenure as the official photographer to Harland & Wolff that have provided his most enduring images. Welch captured the birth of three mighty sisters of the White Star Line: Olympic, Titanic and Britannic and the thousands of men who worked on them.
Last week Gerry Burns from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Vice Chairman of Strabane District Council Dan Kelly came together to view this impressive exhibition of 50 stunning black and white images. The exhibition allowed them to marvel at the scale of these massive ships as well as looking beyond the H&W slipways, as Welch explores the landscape of his native land including some stark images from Donegal and the west of Ireland including Welch’s time working for the Congested Districts Board.
Adrian Beattie Exhibition Curator at the Alley Theatre commented ‘The exhibition has been a huge success and in the first week attracted over 500 people. I would like to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund for their generous support. If you haven’t seen the exhibition yet I would urge you to come and have a look, the exhibition is on until Friday 3rd August. It will then tour venues in the North West in the coming autumn.’
