Ballyshannon Musical Society’s production of The King and I opened on Tuesday night to a rapturous reception.
The wonderful Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is a perennial classic, immortalised in the film starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr.
Jennifer Liston makes a welcome return to the Abbey Centre stage after a ten year absence. She’s a wonderful Anna Leonownes, the perfect mixture of prim British governess and fearless independent thinker. Donnagh Keon also shines, as the fearsome King Mongkut, who wants to bring his ancient kingdom of Siam into the modern era but still wants to retain many of the old ways. Both leads deliver their songs flawlessly and their acting is first rate. We watch their journey unfold with tremendous pleasure!
The rest of the accomplished cast deliver with gust and talent - under the experienced guidance of director Maura Logue and musical director Niamh Currid.
It’s a sumptous show, with a great storyline and fabulous songs such as ‘Getting to Know You’, ‘Hello, Young Lovers’ and ‘Whistle a Happy Tune’.
Make your way to the Abbey Centre, where the show continues through to Saturday night. Tickets are going fast, so book yours on 071 985 1375 or www.abbeycentre.ie. Shows nightly at 8.30pm and Saturday matinée at 1pm.
