Seachtain na Gaeilge gets off to a flying start in Donegal today, with the launch of the annual festival in in Gaoth Dobhair Library by Cllr. Pádraig Ó Dochartaigh.

The Irish Language celebrations continue right through to St Patrick’s Day and almost 80 events will be taking place across the county. Donegal County Council and the Library Service have organised many of these, inlcuding children’s activities such as storytelling, quizzes, drama, singing, recitations, poetry, handicrafts, genealogy workshops, old picture displays, music and dancing and Irish language book displays. For adults, there will be conversation groups, a talk on placenames, coffee mornings and various displays”, he stated.”

This is a particularly important year for Seachtain na Gaeilge as the festival will be a part of The Gathering Ireland, which will be attracting hundreds of thousands of extra visitors to Ireland throughout the year and also a part of Bliain na Gaeilge, a celebration of 120 years of the Irish language revival and movement since Conradh na Gaeilge was set up in 1893.
