One of the highlights of the motorbiking calendar in Donegal is nearly upon us, with the 7th Annual Sandra’s Run through the Hills of Donegal set for Saturday, July 7.

The event was set up in 2006 in memory of Sandra Boyle, to raise funds for leukemia research at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

In the first year, 24 motorcyclists took part and this has grown to more than 140 last year, with similar numbers expected this year. There’s always a great turnout of spectactors in Killybegs and along the route, as well as a great atmosphere in Killybegs with lots of live music and entertainment on into the night.

This year, people living along the route, or turning out along the route to watch, are asked to put up Teddy Bears as a symbol of Our Lady’s Hospital.

Biker registration is at 9.30am at the Diamond, Killybegs. The day-long run itself starts at 11am, headding first to Ardara, then Glenties and onto Dungloe with arrival there at around 12.15pm. Then, it’s on to Bunbeg, Annagry, Crolly and Bloody Foreland where the convoy will stop for a picnic just before 1pm. From there, the Run continues on to Falcarragh and Glenveagh, with arrival at the National Park expected between 2pm and 2.30pm. There will be a tour of the Park and the Run will depart at around 4pm for Letterkenny, Ballybofey, Donegal town and the finish line in Killybegs at around 6pm.

St Catherine’s Marching Band will be on hand to welcome the bikers back to Killybegs in the evening, and that’s just the start of the fun, with live music on the Diamond and bike stunts to entertain. There will be food in the Tara Hotel for bikers and collectors and, at 9.30pm, a free display of Strictly Come Dancing. From 10pm, it’s music from Keltic Kaos in the Tara, also free of charge.

The organisers are asking everyone to come along to either watch the run along the route or welcome the bikers back to Killybegs and join in the evening’s entertainment and to support this very worthy cause by making a donation.

If you can’t come along on the day but want to lend your support, contact Rosaleen Boyle on 087 913 2481 or sandrasrun@hotmail.com, or visit Sandra’s Run facebook page where you can make a donation on-line.
