Keeping true to the ‘Rock’

The Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival was blessed with good weather and sunshine over the June Bank Holiday weekend. And befitting the great man himself, the wealth of entertainers ranging from Mick Taylor to Laundromat kept true to the ‘Rock’ tradition as well as the blues providing those who attended with a wonderful repertoire of top class music and entertainment.
Coupled with its ability to stave off the worst excesses of the recession, it was very much a big ‘yes’ for the Ballyshannon festival and the organisers, where the rest of the county voted an emphatic ‘no’ in the Fiscal Treaty referendum.
There were some suggestions that numbers were slightly down on previous years, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm of the thousands who flocked to the Erne Town, for the festival that is now as firmly established as its sister festival, the long running folk festival.
Sunday night saw the return of the legend that is Horslips, to a huge and standing ovation, rekindling memories of when they were at their zenith drawing in the crowds at the Astoria ballroom in nearby Bundoran.
The big tent feature also brought a great atmosphere to the Market Yard area, although with 30 hours of free open air concerts ranging the Bridgend to the Gables and Rory Gallagher Place, and on the 50th anniversary of the Late Late Show, there was indeed something for everyone in the audience.
