Donegal to get their Onesies out for Pyjama day!

National Pyjama Day takes places on Friday the 23rd of March and Early Childcare Ireland are seeking the support of Donegal early childcare and education services to help raise some much needed funds for the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) ‘Children’s Hospice Home Care Programme’.

Last year 32 out of 164 (19.5%) of Donegal early childcare and education services registered and took part in Pyjama Day 2011 raising over €10,000. This year organisers hope to raise €350,000 in total, which will offer support to families who are caring for seriously ill children in their own homes.

The funding from the National Pyjama Day will help to support a dedicated hospice home care service for children. It will support the IHF in the funding of five out of eight Children’s Outreach Nurses (Pyjama Day Nurses) in the community.

On a national level, it is estimated that 1,400 children are living with life-limiting illness in Ireland. There are about 350 child deaths every year – the majority in the first year of life. The IHF has committed €2.5m to support the implementation of national policy on children’s palliative care which was launched by the Department of Health & Children in March 2010. Under this programme, the IHF is also funding Ireland’s first Consultant in Children’s Palliative Care and has funded courses in children’s palliative care for nurses and healthcare professionals. Since 2007, a total of 1,500 healthcare professionals have received training.

Anyone involved in the early childhood care and education sector can easily take part in National Pyjama Day by:

1. Registering online through www.earlychildhoodireland.ie and clicking on the Pyjama Day Logo on the home page.
