Donegal Students to face Green Dragons!

Second level students from Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny and the Abbey Vocational School Donegal Town, will be firmly focused on the €7,000 prize fund for product mentoring and development as they prepare for the national heat of Agri Aware’s Green Dragon Secondary Schools Innovation Challenge.

The national heat of the Green Dragon Innovation Challenge will take place in Athlone, on Wednesday next, 22nd February. Along with 300 other students from around the country, the Donegal natives will present their innovative ideas for new products or services for the Agriculture, Food, Environmental and Health and Safety sectors, to the Green Dragon panel. Students will be hoping to impress the judging panel and secure a place at the National Final which will take place in Dublin on March 28th 2012.

Now in its third year, the Agri Aware initiative supported by Bord Bia, AIB Bank and FBD, provides students with an opportunity to bring their innovative ideas from concept stage; through to the development of business and marketing plans; right up to pitching their idea in front of a professional panel of judges. For one truly innovative idea, the top prize of an €7,000 product mentoring and development prize fund will be available to support the students in bringing their product or service to the market.

Speaking about the national heat, Agri Aware Chairman Bernard Donohue commented, “The standard of entries received this year is once again exceptional. Truly innovative ideas for each of the four sectors have emerged. The national heat should make for a very interesting and competitive day and we wish all of the participants the best of luck.”

With support from Teagasc, the Green Dragon category winners will showcase their idea at the Euroscience Open Forum as part of the Dublin City of Science in July 2012 at the National Convention Centre, Dublin. This event will be attended by over 6,000 scientists, business leaders and Government officials and was officially launched last month by Richard Bruton T.D., Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.
