Donegal conquers Kerry again - this time it’s Daniel!

Thanks to John Reidy of The Kerryman Newspaper for this account of how Kerry doted on Daniel during his visit to Castleisland Day Car Centre in Kerry on Monday.

“My God! You must have had the Child of Prague out all night,” was Daniel O’Donnell’s opening remark as he acknowledged the ideal conditions which greeted his arrival at Castleisland Day Care Centre in Co. Kerry at lunch time on Monday.

As he braced himself in the face of an avalanche of delighted fans, he flung his arms wide and embraced them as they came to him.

“How’s Margo” - he was asked by one woman while another shouted “Up Donegal” to which he quipped: “Don’t mention the war.”

The Kincasslagh born singer - who has over four dozen CD releases to his credit and a museum in his honour in his native county - mixed and mingled with the ease of a man who knew these women all his life as they crowded around him.

As if the meet and greet and photographic session in the yard of the centre wasn’t enough, the extremely affable Daniel went indoors and sang three songs and told yarns to the delight of the clients, staff and guests of the centre.

He did a ‘Jimmy and Joanie’ duet with staff member, Rita McCarthy and afterwards he went across the road to visit one of the nuns from the Presentation Convent who couldn’t make it over to the centre.

Centre manager, Marcella Finn was full of praise for the latest superstar to call by. RTE presenter, Miriam O’Callaghan visited the centre last February to launch ‘For Ever and Ever’, the centre’s second fundraising CD.

“He was everything we had always heard about him. He gave everyone who wanted to talk to him time and attention. And the fact that he came in a sang for us – what more could you ask of the man – we are delighted with ourselves,” said Ms. Finn.
