A Thought of Sligo - Yeats on Film
A Season of Yeats at The Model in Sligo celebrates the lives and legacies of the two Yeats brothers, Jack and William Butler Yeats. In partnership with Tread Softly, The Model has formulated a screening schedule for the Season of Yeats Festival.
This series of Yeats films commences with Soul of Ireland, directed by Sean O’Mordha on Sun 29 Jul. and is repeated on Sun 05 Aug both at 4pm.
This two- part documentary looks at the evolution of landscape painting in Ireland through the experience of six artists: Sean McSweeney, Barrie Cooke, James O’Connor, Mary Lohan, Martin Gale and Dorothy Cross. It examines the tradition of landscape painting with its roots in the West of Ireland, from Sligo and Achill Island to the coasts of Connemara and Donegal influential to artists such as Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, Sean Keating, Maurice Mc Gonigal and Patrick Collins. Artists whose works are part of the Niland Collection. The documentary is divided into two parts, each part is 52 minutes in length, with a 15 minute break in between.
Following this is a series of short films including Oscar nominated and Golden Bear winning documentary Yeats Country (1965) by Patrick Carey. These engrossing films will be screened on Wednesday, Aug 01 & Aug 08 at 6pm. An ambitious work, Carey uses direct quotations from W.B. Yeats’ writing to illustrate the countryside that he knew and loved in Yeats Country. Following that in a brilliant contrast is Bat Eyes, a short film directed by Damian Power; this beautifully shot Australian finalist in this year’s You Tube short film competition, revolves around Yeats’ poem When You Are Old and Grey and involves 24 year old Adam having his eyes tested at the optometrist for the first time.
During this screening there will be chance to see archive footage from 1923, showing William Butler Yeats receiving his Noble Prize in Stockholm and on a more somber note, footage of his funeral in Sligo in 1948.
Also screening as part of this selection of old and new short films, and archive footage, is the new short film from Loch Bó Films, directed by Sinéad Dolan; Yeats, Sligo and Me is set in contemporary Sligo, exploring the relationships between ordinary Sligo people, young and old. Using lines from Yeats’ poetry, this short film depicts a modern Sligo where Yeats’ legacy is firmly ingrained in the people and places.
On Fridays 03 Aug & 10 Aug at 1.15pm, The Model plays host to the final set of short films connected with the Yeats Family, including: The Art Of Ireland (1950’s) produced, written and narrated by Brian O’Doherty, a friend of Jack Yeats, it traces the development of visual art and architecture in Ireland. This documentary includes some beautiful imagery of the works of artists such as Jack B. Yeats, Frederick Burton and Evie Hone. And finally, W.B Yeats- A Tribute (1950’s) is a film by George Fleischman and J.D Sheridan where Yeats’ poems are set to against the backdrops of the cities where he had lived and using visually arresting imagery of the county that he loved so much, Sligo.
