Brian Friel’s Freedom of the City at An Grianán
Brian Friel's play The Freedom of the City is set in the Mayor's Parlour, Guildhall, Derry.
This Thursday, January 31, The Freedom of the City will begin its three day run in An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny and, as it’s funded by the Peace 3 programme, all the tickets are free to the public.
The production of Brian Friel’s play, which functions as a commentary on both the tragedy of Bloody Sunday in 1972 and the civil rights struggle in general in the North at that time, is directed by Sean Donegan.
A combination of professional and amateur actors drawn from the North West and cross-border areas will perform this tale of three protesters who, in the aftermath of a civil rights meeting in 1970’s Derry, mistakenly find themselves in the Mayor’s parlour in the Guild Hall in Derry with tragic consequences. In the light of the findings of the Saville Inquiry, this play is more relevant now than ever.
The production can also be seen in the Balor Arts Centre in Ballybofey on February 7, the Alley Theatre in Strabane on February 9 and in the Millennium Forum, Derry on February 11.
The performance in Derry is part of Derry’s City of Culture 2013 programme.
This production is part-financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Donegal County Council.
