Sympathy: The tragic drowning of Shane O'Neill, Walkinstown, Dublin, which took place in the River Lee in Cork, last week caused deep shock and sadness in the parish of Gaoth Dobhair where the family is well known.
The family have a strong tie with this parish, as Shane's mother, the former Kathleen Gallagher, (Kathleen Pheadair Óig), is originally from Glassagh, Derrybeg. Aged 22 years, Shane was a student in St. John's College. The accident occurred as Shane
and a friend went for a swim. Sadly Shane got into trouble and the alarm was immediately raised by his friend.
A son of Brian and Kathleen O'Neill, the family have a holiday home in Glassagh and they pay frequent visits to the area. Shane was a very friendly individual and he will be sorely missed by his living family and many friends. Shane's funeral mass was celebrated in Dublin on Friday morning last and afterwards his remains were transferred to Gaoth Dobhair for burial in Cnoc Fola Cemetery. This funeral was one of the largest seen in the area for some time. He is survived by his parents, Brian and Kathleen O'Neill; a brother, sister, grandmother, Gráinne Gallagher, who lives in Glassagh, family circle, relatives and friends, to all of whom sincere sympathy is extended in their tragic loss.

Whist Drive: At the whist drive held in Scoil Mhuire, Derrybeg on Monday, 28th September, Syliva Morgan, Cotteen, with a score of 179 points, won top score prize. First lady's prize, with a score of 170 points, was Susan McCole, Dore and second lady's prize, with 166 points, was Madge Gillespie, Annagry. First gent's prize, with a score of 173 points, was won by Eddie McGeady, Dunlewey, while second gent's prize, with a score of 173 points, went to Hughie Duffy, Annagry. The whist will be held again in Scoil Mhuire, Derrybeg on Monday night starting at 8.30pm.

Lotto: In the Scoil Bhríde, Meenacladdy lotto draw on October 1st, the numbers drawn were, 1, 10, 11 and 13. Nancy McGeady, Meenalough, Cnoc Fola matched three numbers. In the next draw the jackpot prize will be 1,325 euro.

Disabled Drivers Association: In the Disabled Drivers Association church gate collection taken up outside St. Mary's Church, Derrybeg, the total sum raised amounts to e892. 42. The organisers wish to thank everyone who contributed and also all those who helped with the collection.

Rural Transport: As part of the Rural Transport a bus will leave Brinaleck at 9.15am every Thursday and will travel to Dungloe. This service is free for pensions who hold a bus pass.

Collection: The annual church gate collection in aid of The Friends of Letterkenny General Hospital will be taken up at all the churches in the parish this weekend, Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th. Your continued support to this will be very much appreciated.

Saturday Evening Mass: Due to the harvest rally held in the parish this Saturday the 7pm Mass in St. Mary's Church, Derrybeg has been deferred to 8pm.

Wedding Bells: The wedding of Miss Dáire Doherty, Ballindrait, Bunbeg and Mr. Brian McTernan, Temple Street, Sligo took place in St. Jilgt Church, Prague, Chec Republic on September last. Dáire is a daughter of Mrs. Bríd and the late Peadar Doherty, and Brian is a son of Éamonn and Kathleen McTernan. The wedding ceremony with nuptial mass and Papal Blessing was performed by Fr. Romuald Stepan. The bride was given away by her brother, Paul. Best man was Tom McSharry and the grooms men were, Gabriel McSharry, and Gareth Keevey. The chief bridesmaid was Aisling Doherty (sister of the bride) and the other bridesmaids were, Margaret Toner and Cecilia O'Reilly. Following the wedding ceremony the newly wed couple and guests went on a cruise of the River Vltava, where they enjoyed champagne while taking in the breath taking sight of the city. Afterwards the wedding reception took place in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The couple would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the guests who travelled from Ireland, England, and the United States to be with them on this special day.
Irish Heart Foundation: The organisers of the recent church gate collection in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation taken up in the parish wish to thank everyone who contributed so generously, also everyone who helped with the collection. The total sum raised amounts to e892. 42.

Ceolchoirm an Oireachtais: Cuireann Fidleoirí na Tíre mar fidil le Ciarán Ó Maonaigh as Gaoth Dobhair, Aodhán Ó Domhnaill agus Damien Mac Gaoithín, i gcuideachta Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh ó Altan, Mánus Lunny, Séamus Ó Beaglaíoch agus ceoltóirí agus damhsóirí eile tús le himeachtaí Feile an Oireachtais i Leitir Ceanainn in Amharclann an Grianán ar an 28ú Deireadh Fómhair.

Buaiteoirí Club 100: Winners of the Fó Chumann Lúth Chleas Gael Ghaoth Dobhair Club 100 for the month of September were: 1st prize (450 euro), Colman Mac Cumhaill, Carrick, Derrybeg, 2nd prize (250 euro), Peig Sweeney, Knockastolar, 3rd prize (150 euro): Tomás Diver, Lunniagh, 4th prize (100 euro), Anna Uí Chnáimhsí, Glassagh and 5th prize (100 euro): John Diver, Lunniagh.

Died in Derry: The death occurred on Thursday night of last week of Mrs. Mary O'Donnell, Derry. Aged in her seventies, he late mother, Biddy Dhonnachaidh Conaghan, was originally from Thorr, Crolly. Mary and her husband, Jerry and family were well known in Gaoth Dobhair and were frequent visitors to the area. They have a holiday home in Glassagh. Mary's funeral took place in Derry at the weekend. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; three sons; three daughters; brother, Denis Conaghan, and family circle, to all of whom deep sympathy is extended.

Parish Mission: A parish Mission will be held in Gaoth Dobhair during the month of October. The mission will be in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary. The mission will be held in the Church of St. Colmcille, Cnoc Fola and the Church of the Sacred Heart, Dunlewey from Saturday 17th to Friday 23rd October. It will be held in St. Mary's Church, Derrybeg and St. Patrick's Church, Meenaweal from from Saturday 24th to Friday 30th, October.
