Donegal Democrat shares in Donegal Community Games success

The Annual Community Games National Volunteer and Media Awards presentations took place in the Salthill Hotel, Galway, last weekend with a large crowd from the county attending.
It was a very successful night for the organisation, who will celebrate a significant 50th birthday next year. The MC for the night was well-known RTE soccer correspondent, Tony O'Donoghue, who has formed a great relationship with the organisation, being MC also last year.
There was significant success for Donegal with Ulster and National awards for the Letterkenny Area; PRO Michael Crossan and the Donegal Democrat.
National President of Community Games, Gerry Davenport, in welcoming everyone said the night was a very special one for the huge number of volunteers who give so much of their free time to the organisation in their areas.
Also present were special guests Pearce Flannery, Deputy Mayor Galway; Sean Canney, TD, Minister of State; Eamonn O'Cuiv TD; Noel Treacy, chairman of Galway GAA; Paul Gillen HSE; Bridghid Carson, Irish Independent and Olive Loughnane, four time Olympian and World Championship medal winner, who all assisted with the presentations.
Donegal was honoured in a number of categories. Mary O'Donnell from Milford received the Adult Volunteer award for her work in her area down the years. The Youth Volunteer award was won by Alysha Heron, Fanad, for her involvement at the different competitions.
The Best Area award went to Letterkenny, who had a large number of participants this year and the area also received the Ulster Provincial Cup for the best area. The Best Small Area award was won by Ramelton with Hilary Moore accepting the trophy.
In the Media awards the Donegal Democrat and, represented by sports editor, Peter Campbell, and PRO Michael Crossan, who won the 2015 overall award, were the runner-up this time for their coverage of the games. Michael also received the award for Best Article published on Community Games
Letterkenny woman Bernie Brennan, who is the National Director in PR and Marketing, co-ordinated the presentations.
Following the dinner and presentations the night concluded with a dance which was enjoyed by the 360 guests.
