The competitors availed of refreshments afterwards and we wish both Captains every success in their year.

The Gaeltacht team travelled to the Ros Guill peninsula on Saturday last and came away with a hard fought 2.5 matches over a Sandy Hills course which is in great shape at the moment and up there with the best links courses in the land. For a while it looked like only 1 match would be secured, but the last few teams put a more respectable look on the end result. Victorious were the pairings of Anthony Doherty/Aaron Sherlock and Noel O Fearraigh/Pol Mac Cumhaill while Sean O Duibhir and Peadar O Gallchoir sportingly called their match a half on the last hole.
Scoring was well below average in the MCM Spirits competition on Sunday as tired legs and minds were carried over from Sandy Hills. Torthai Iomlan: Peadar O Gallchoir 39; Aodh O Donaill 39; Dean James 39; Eric Mac Cathmhaoil 23. Mile buiochas do MCM ar shon an urraiocht.

The Swilly Inn Spring League continued last weekend with qualifying round number two. Two pairings carded 38 points from 13 holes, P Flood/P Carr and S Boyle/S Gildea, the latter consolidating their place at the top of the leaderboard. J Doherty and P Munnelly opened their account with an impressive 36, and A Lorimer/R Holmes got back on track, also shooting 36. C Malone/B Kelly and The Lynch Brothers lie just off the leaders having scored 35 points at the weekend. It is all to play for as we enter round three this weekend. A reminder that the final will be played over 18 holes on Easter Sunday, April 4th, and the four best scores from five qualifying rounds will be counted.
In the Club Open last Saturday, Newtowncunningham man Paul Bryan tamed the Barnhill course after his winter lay-off, returning an exceptional 47 stableford points. Playing off 21, Paul hit a near perfect round, with 6 pars, and 11 bogies topped off with a birdie on the 18th. Richard Eaton (18) took second place with 39 points, from Gerard Duffy (19) in third, with 38. The Sunday Members competition also produced high scoring with several birdies on the cards. John Doherty (18) took first prize with 43 points, from K Shiels (10) on 41, and Kieran Walsh (14) on 40. Congratulations to all of the above.

A timesheet for the singles stableford event is available in the clubhouse, and members are asked to note that the prize-giving ceremony will take place in Swing Bar and Restaurant on St Patricks Night at 10.00pm.
Also on Saint Patrick's Day, the club will be represented in the Letterkenny parade with a float organized by the Ladies Committee. Lady Captain Monica McDonagh has appealed for volunteers to assist with preparations. Many hands make light work, so if you are free then why not help out by getting in touch with the Lady Captain.
The Social Committee is holding a card night in Swing Bar and Restaurant this Friday night (March 12th) at 8.30pm, and all members are encouraged to come along and support the venture.
The excellent work is continuing on the second fairway, and weather permitting it is envisaged that the project will be complete for Easter weekend. In the interim, the hole remains in play as a par 3 from the temporary tee-box.
The competitions committee has now gone to print with our fixtures card, and it will be available from Saint Patricks Day onwards, in the Club Shop, and in Swing Bar and Restaurant. There will be a Club Open this Saturday, and a Club Members competition on Sunday.

Gaeltacht Alliance
Spring is finally in the air and the frost is reluctantly easing its grip and there's a good stretch in the day. So hopefully, there will be little excuse for the clubs involved in the Alliance to play their remaining matches. All captains should have dates fixed for playing their remaining matches and if not,why not?
After one home match and two away matches Cruit are on 18 points, Rosapenna are on 56 pts after two home and two away. Portnoo have play one home and two away and are on 16 pts. Portsalon are on 30 pts with 2 away and one home match played. Dunfanaghy have played 3 home and one away match and have 44 pts. Clochaneely have played 2 home and one away match and have 27 pts. Gweedore have played 2 home and 2 away matches and have 43 pts. Difficult to say yet but the fight for the fourth champion's league spot looks to be over for Cruit, Clochaneely and Portnoo. However with three and in some cases four matches to be played you'd never know!
Narin & Portnoo
The Captains' Drive-in will be held at Narin this Saturday, commencing at 10a.m. sharp. It had been postponed due to the sudden passing of Competition Convenor, Francie Cunningham. We wish Seamus McDonagh and Margaret Roarty every success during 2010 and after the big build-up I gave them the last time, they'd better not let me down on the day! I've been advised not to needle Seamus too much, so I will leave that to others, while Martin's fine form of late has put it up to the Strabane woman to come up with a big, straight drive. Nothing less will suffice! The proceeds of the fourball scramble will go towards the Hydropool in Dungloe.
Last year's Captain's Prize winner, John Bán Gallagher was at his best once again last week in capturing the February Medal on a break-off-tie from Stephen McGinley. His front nine was so-so, but he really turned it on coming home, birdying 11, 13 and 16 for a 38 gross return. He thus becomes the first qualifier for the Golfer of the Year competition to be staged later in the year.
James Doherty of Dunfanaghy enjoyed his visit to Narin last Wednesday and returned to that lovely course with a Wednesday Open success safely tucked into the golf bag. The competition was played over 15 holes on the day, yet James' total of 36 points was magnificent. The little birdie on 16 capped a fine performance.
Barry Keeney teamed up with Tony Gildea to win last Sunday's fourball betterball by three clear strokes over Finnian O'Doherty and Kieran Cunnea in second. The Glenties native featured prominently on the card, birdying 2, 10 and 18. Tony chipped in with several key putts at vital moments and the result was an eight under par total of 44 points.
