Five local children have just returned home from Italy with a clutch of World Championship medals.

Aoise McHenry of Bundoran won 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze. Courtney Farrell of Ballyshannon took 1 Silver and 2 Bronze. Aimee McGloin of Glenade won 1 Silver and 3 Bronze. Evan Oates of Cliffoney won 2 Gold and 1 Silver. And Michael O’Shea of Kinlough took 2 Bronze.

The Green Dragon Karate Club is ran by father and son John and Michael Sweeney from Sligo.

Michael has been running the Green Dragon Karate Club in the Kinlough Community Centre since April 2011. When the club first began, Michael had only a handful of children training and, even back then, he could see potential in all of them.

“When he first mentioned the World Karate Championships in the middle of last year, none of the parents believed it could be achieved,” one delighted parent told the Donegal Democrat.

“However, Michael proved us wrong and on October 31, students from Kinlough, together with the rest of the Green Dragon

team from Sligo, Carrick-on-shannon and Dromahair travelled to Carrara, Italy to represent Ireland in the WTKA Championships.”

All of the team, aged from 7 and up, had trained 3 days a week in the run up to the event. Their hard work and dedication paid off when

the team brought home a total of 103 medals - 38 Gold, 41 Sliver and 24 Bronze.

Well done to everyone on the team - you are all winners!

Karate is on every Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 7pm-8pm in Kinlough Community Centre.

Ring Michael on 087 601 9844 or 087 901 1233 for further details.
