Following a weekend of severe winds, hail and sleet showers and a strong wind chill, temperatures around the county are expected to rise from today.

Donegal took a severe battering over the last number of days as winds reached gale force in a number of areas. On Saturday night, there were heavy falls of sleet and hail over high grounds.

Temperatures are due to rise to around ten degrees today, with cloud and occasional showers forecast.

As people get ready for one of the busiest party nights of the year tonight, Gardai have once again appealed for motorists not to drink and drive, keep within the speed limits and show due care and attention at all times. “New Year’s Eve is always a night of celebration and we are asking all road users to ensure that they play their part in making it a safe and memorable one this year,” a garda spokesman commented.
