Sudden death of a ‘gentle giant’

There was widespread shock in Donegal town this weekend at the sudden passing of George Griffin.

The very popular Clar man was aged in his mid-40s. He was working at Dom’s Pier 1, where he was a doorman for the last nine years, on Friday night. It is understood that he passed away during the night and was found on Saturday morning.

Dom Breslin, who considered George a close, lifelong friend, said everyone who knew him is devastated at the news of his death.

“George was the most obliging person you could meet anywhere: he would do anything for anyone. During his nine years working with us, he was so kind and helpful. Hail, rain, or snow, he’d be here working and doing whatever he could to look after people.

“He was so modest as well, a real gentle giant.

“Everyone’s devastated at his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his brother Johnny, who lives in Mountcharles, and his sister Mary, who lives in the home place.”

Removal today at 4pm from the Chapel of Rest at Letterkenny General Hospital to the home of his sister Mary at Clar. Removal from there tomorrow at 10.30am to St Agatha’s Church, Clar, for 11am Funeral Mass. Inter afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Family flowers only please, donations in lieu if so desired to the Patients Comfort Fund, Donegal Community Hospital, c/o any family member.
