iT’S the August Bank Holiday weekend again, and that can only mean one thing in south Donegal - a trip to the Leghowney Sheep Races on Saturday!

This very special, not to say unique event, is a highlight of the summer calendar, with great fun for all the family. And it’s all for a great cause, as it’s the annual fundraiser for Leghowney Community Centre.

The level of competition at the races is suprisingly fierce, considering that most of the jockeys are such teddy bears. But then again, there’s money to be won, which only adds to the excitement.

First race is off at 1.30 sharp, so come in plenty of time to see the sheep in the parade ring and check out their form. Doors open at 1pm.

There will be five races, with ten sheep running in each. And, to top it all off, the grand finale race will consist of people, dressed as sheep, blindfolded, and pushing wheelbarrows through an obstacle course!

On the day there will be many activities for children, all of which are free, including bouncy castles, ball trailer, gladiators and face painting.

Other events include paint-balling, guess the weight of the sheep, nearest the pin and many more.

Johnny Patterson will be there on the day to demonstrate his expertise in Sheep Shearing.

The BBQ will be smoking all day and the Leghowney Country Market will be on hand, with both a stall selling home-made goodies and produce, as well as providing freshly baked scones for afternoon tea.

Ice-cream and other refreshments will also be available.

Follow the signs, and all the cars!, heading from the N15 between Barnesmore Gap and Donegal Town. Or, if you prefer to leave the car, avail of the free shuttle bus leaving from the Abbey Hotel, The Diamond, every hour on the hour.

It’s a great day out for all the family.
